Introduction

Drax Group plc is a British electrical power generation and supply company. The Group is made up of upstream and downstream enterprises. The principal downstream enterprises are based in the UK and include Drax Power Limited, which runs Europe’s biggest biomass-fuelled power station, Drax power station, near Selby in North Yorkshire – the UK’s largest decarbonisation project, as well as supplying between 7-8 per cent of the country’s electricity needs.

Objectives

Our partnership will support Drax’s zero-carbon and responsible pellet sourcing aspirations, and pioneer a Healthy Forest Landscapes approach to protect and enhance key forest values. Regulation and certification provide valuable assurances, but we also see a clear need for direct engagement with forest landscapes and deeper insights into the impact of Drax's woody biomass demand.

Notre engagement

We are working together to:

  • Define source catchment metrics to monitor forest cover, carbon stock, biodiversity and socio-economic wellbeing
  • Pilot, refine, and roll out monitoring throughout Drax’s pellet supply chain
  • Engage forest stakeholders (communities, environmental and social organisations, industry, academics and government) to understand their views and priorities.
  • Where serious issues emerge, assess any link with pellet sourcing, and explore whether an intervention to address the issue is feasible.
