Reaction to death of farmer in APP concession.

As of January 2019, The Forest Trust has become Earthworm Foundation.

JAMBI, SUMATRA, INDONESIA – On Saturday 28 February 2015 a farmer of Lubuk Mandarsah Village was found dead, believed to have been attacked by security staff (Quick Reaction Unit) of PT. Mandala Cipta Persada (MCP), which is a security contractor of PT. Wirakarya Sakti, a concession supplier of Asia Pulp & Paper (APP). We condemn what appears to be a brutal act of violence. Our thoughts and condolences are with the victim’s family and community at this terrible time.

We understand that APP is taking all necessary steps to support the family and the community. We also understand that while the police investigation takes place, APP has instructed WKS to suspend all relevant security personnel in the chain of command.

We will continue to support APP’s work to implement its Forest Conservation Policy, particularly the implementation of responsible social management across its supplier base. We would strongly support an independent, credible and measured process to investigate the incident and ensure that justice is served.

Agung Wiyono, Senior Manager at TFT Indonesia, says, “We are heartbroken that this tragic incident has happened. We offer our deepest condolences to the victim’s family and their community. We are with one voice condemning these violent acts and demanding that those responsible be held accountable. TFT has been proactively exploring the important and measured steps needed to support the police investigation. We will work with APP to ensure measures are in place to prevent such incidents from happening again.”
