Wood

Illegal logging is when forest products are harvested, transported, processed, and bought or sold in violation of national or international laws.

Such activities take place around the world, particularly in the rainforests of Asia, South America and Africa. Such tropical deforestation is responsible for around 10% of global warming emissions alone.

The global wood trade continues to grow and is on course to reach a value of $450 billion by 2020, which is good for jobs and prosperity, but too often the trade is linked to illegal logging, forest destruction, corruption, human rights violations, and vast greenhouse gas emissions.

Our work

We support forest owners to improve practices and establish systems to verify that their wood is legal throughout the supply chain.

We were founded as the Tropical Forest Trust in 1999 to help furniture companies establish transparent wood supply chains linked to responsible forestry operations in South East Asia. Our member companies, sourcing furniture in Vietnam, were the first to achieve this, and inspired many other companies in the region to take the same approach.

Today, we continue to partner with companies to source wood products responsibly. We support community-based projects to improve timber production and gain access to international markets, and we help retailers to comply with the European Timber Regulation.
